OTTOMAN MATERIAL CULTURE WORKSHOP IN BIRMINGHAM: BURSARY FOR BLACK SEA SCHOLARS
We are pleased to announce a bursary for a doctoral student or early career researcher--generously funded by the British Institute in Ankara (BIAA)—to participate in the upcoming workshop, ‘Empires of the Eye: Ottoman Material Culture and its Place in Birmingham’ funded by the British Academy / Leverhulme Foundation. The workshop focuses on the collections of Ottoman applied arts (mainly textiles and ceramics) at Birmingham Museums Trust and will take place in early April 2014.
The bursary is for £500, intended to cover flights and accommodation for one individual (return/round-trip to Turkey or alternate country and three nights in in Birmingham).
Eligibility: a current doctoral student or early career researcher (within three years of degree date) at a university in Turkey or another Black Sea country with a demonstrated interest in Ottoman material culture.
Application: for more details about the workshop and an application for the bursary, please email Amanda Phillips before 1 January 2014. The applications will be due 15 January and the selection made 20 January.
Review: The organisers of the workshop, Dr Rebecca Bridgman (Birmingham Museums Trust) and Dr Amanda Phillips (University of Birmingham), in consultation with the BIAA, will make a selection based on the merits of the application as well as on how the individual might make an original contribution to the workshop.
Due to constraints of space and funding, we are unfortunately unable to accommodate other attendees.
Further enquiries may also be directed to Amanda Phillips
